Beginners guide to natural hair: Don't forget to pre-poo!

What exactly is a Pre-Poo; you may be asking. Pre-Poo stands for pre-shampoo - which is a must do treatment for longer and healthier hair. Look at it this way; its just another way to give your hair some natural ingredients before you wash your hair. You can use either coconut oil, castor oil, extra virgin olive oil, grape seed oil, or shampoo (as long as it's sulfate free). If you plan on using shampoo try brands like Shea Moisture - Raw Shea Butter Moisture (as discussed in - My go to products!), Crème  of Nature Eden, etc.) Or you can make your own pre-poo. (4 DIY Pre-poo recipes!)

After selecting your method - an oil or moisturizing conditioner (as discussed above) simply apply the mixture you hair prior to shampooing.

Advantages of Pre-Poo

1.Pre-Poo makes it easier to detangle your natural tresses
2. Helps to reduce breakage
3. Makes hair softer (yay!)
4. Your hair will be easier to manipulate (manage)
5. Restores lost moisture

How to Pree-Poo

1. Choose your oil type.
2. Gently use your finger, or detangling comb to detangle your hair and separate it into 4-6 sections. Make sure you untwist one section at a time.
3. Apply the natural oil to each section of your hair from tips to root.
4. Cover hair with a plastic cap for 20-30 minutes. You can sit under a heat source (bonnet cap, dryer, etc)
5. Rinse your hair and follow your regular wash regimen.

Pre-Poo with natural Hair Conditioner

1. Choose a liquid natural conditioner that dissolves easily when applied to your hair. Just make sure the conditioner is mixed with distilled water. If it doesn't include distilled water, mix it with a drop of warm water.
2. Shampoo, and wash as you normally do.

TIP: Do not rub your hair while washing, as it can cause breakage if handled too roughly. Gently massage your scalp and hair follicles. Handle with care.

However many times you pre-poo your natural hair is up to you but, I would recommend you do this treatment weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. Depends on the style of your hair and how often you wash it. The Pre-Poo is done prior to the shampooing, so Pre-Poo as often as you wash your hair.

Out of the two methods, I would say that the oil is more effective. It is super easy to find in your local store or organic market plus, it's cheaper! You can definitely get more usage out of a bottle of coconut oil as opposed to a bottle of conditioner. Depending on where you live - you can get a big bottle of natural hair oil for $8+.

If you insist on using conditioner - which is fine! Make sure it isn't cheap. Cheap conditioners tend to contain synthetic ingredients that coat the hair and conceal damages - while oil will nourish your hair naturally...just use the oil!

Enjoy the Pree-Poo!
