Men's Fashion Part I : Urban Street Chic

Hello world! As we all know, most if not all fashion trends come full circle. Varsity jackets, not new, skinny jeans, not new, bell bottoms, nope, suit and ties, definitely not. All of these fashion trends have managed to wriggle themselves back into today's fashion norm. Time and time again we see regular people mimicking the outfits of popular celebrities and fashion icons, but what about your own personal style? What does your mimicking say about you?

Don't get me wrong some celebrities have awesome style and I look to them for inspiration from time to time, but a majority of the time I like to put my pieces together myself. I shouldn't look at you everyday and be able to pin point which celebrity had on that exact outfit last week. Spending money you don't have on the clothes that some celebrity enjoys wearing does not deem you fashion forward. At the end of the day they have money to spend on labels.. most of us don't. Live within your means people! Plus, you can put together a great outfit on budget.. just catch a sale!

Creativity is definitely something that is lacking among today's generation. Most of the time it's monkey see monkey do. But there are the few whose fashion choices never cease to amaze. Have you ever looked at a regular person and thought to yourself where did he get that? That jacket is crazy. How does he put his stuff together? Those are the rare jewels I'm talking about! The men who rock out with their own style and kill it EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.

We all need a little inspiration from time to time so I've decided to do something special for the fellas. I've reached out to some of the most stylish men I know and together we will share interesting looks for the season. Every Thursday for a few weeks we will cover different types of male fashion; Street chic, High fashion GQ, Casual, and Urban Street Chic. If you guys have any requests for different styles just leave a  comment below. In this segment they will showcase their Urban Street Fashion. Here we go!

Hailing out of Queens New York, Kaleb Hopkins gracefully escorts us into his world of Urban Fashion. I've been noticing a lot of men wearing these pants with the elastic bands at the bottom.

Based on what I've seen this style is either a hit or miss. Some people can rock it while others look a hot mess.

BUT Mr. Hopkins gives a fine example of how to rock this look.

It's chill yet masculine due to the rouging (ruffling at the bottom of the pants) and his masculine boots.

He completes this look with a simple T-shirt and a couple of accessories. Simple yet chic... urban chic to be exact!

As seen below, by simply adding a few accessories or extra pieces of clothing you can have a totally different look. For some reason a lot of men seem to think that accessories are just for the ladies, but Kaleb debunks that myth by adding a few items to his Urban look. That fedora looks amazing with his pull over! The additional checkered shirt contrasts with his olive pants giving it a clean and polished look.
How does he get clothes to blend together so well? Perhaps you've wanted to wear something similar and just aren't sure what to do. I figured that may be one of the first things that popped into your head, so I went ahead and asked him how he goes about putting a dope outfit together.

"Some people start from the top, some people start from the bottom. I find a center piece. A center piece is the thing you have to wear that day. Once you select your center piece you build your outfit around that. Everything you add to that outfit should compliment your center piece in some shape way or form."

Fashion Tip of The Week From Kaleb: This is the biggest pet peeve of my life. If your female counterpart whether she's your friend or girlfriend dresses very nice and you're in a dingy T-shirt and jeans you are WRONG. You expect her to look nice at all times and you express that in some way whether it's blunt or subliminal. At the same time she's thinking the same thing about you when you're wearing your dingy T-shirt and your unfitted pants. PLEASE compliment your female counterpart! If you do not compliment them both with your personality and with your exterior they will say something to you or leave you.

Brooklyn Native Maalik Murphy takes us to the street with his fantastic Urban Street Wear.

Naturally, people have different definitions of Urban street wear but obviously Mr. Murphy is right on the money! I mean, how amazing is his sweater?

The pairing of dark and light colors was done perfectly. The neon green and pink offset the darkness of the sweater which causes it to pop! Have you noticed that his sneakers seem to match perfectly with the entire outfit? Talk about precision!

His sweater was actually made by a friend who owns a clothing line Called JIGGY. *If you're interested in the sweater or any other clothes he makes you can find the link to his website in the outfit detail section.*

As for the pairing of the sneakers, this gentlemen, should be considered a rare occurrence. Many have tried to match their sneakers and shirts perfectly but for some reason something feels a bit off. Not in Mr. Murphy's case!

I asked him about his street wear and how he went about putting his outfit together.

"Most of the time I start an outfit with a sneaker or shoe. Whichever is being worn that day. Bright sneakers are better paired with darker clothing so that the shoe pops and draws attention to it. Darker sneakers are better matched with brighter colors or colors that fall within the same family as the sneaker. The key is to not want to fully match everything but choose a specific aspect of color of the shoe and match that."

Fashion Tip of the Week From Maalik: Whatever makes you unique is what people will embrace. If you are a bow tie and slacks guy then be that and be true to it. If you're a Jordan's and TIMBS type of guy then be that and embrace it. It will make people do the same.

Be sure to tune in next week (June 11th) for our take on GQ High Fashion.
